Wildlife

Birds of East Africa

An early safari for us at the beginning of May which is typically during the long rains. We did not really know what to expect. Rain yes, but what would it actually be like on the reserves?
We started off with a couple of new lodges for us, Naru Moru River Lodge in the foot hills of Mt Kenya, and Maili Saba Camp on the rim of the Menengai Crater just north of Nakuru. Then on to an old favorite of ours The Mara Serena Lodge.
As well as being the wet season there had also been a lot of problems following the elections, which had drastically reduced the amount of tourists to Kenya with the result that at the first two camps we were the only tourists staying overnight.
We were not dissapointed, yes we had rain, mainly in Nakuru, but the worst of it was after our game drive so it was not a problem. There was plenty of wildlife and we did particularly well with birds, identifying several new species for us.
